My grandfather Nick Karras, grew up in the port of Piraeus, Greece and shared his passion for the sea with my mother.
The family immigrated to South Africa in the early 1920’s and settled in Pretoria, where he opened the Star Café on Church Square.
My father had a small coal transporting company, which I joined. As a sideline, I started transporting fish and then opened a fish wholesale business.
In 1992, I established The Codfather, now recognised as one of this country’s most iconic restaurants.

Martin has been the man behind the magic! He is responsible for purchasing and advising customers on our freshest seafood offerings.

Srinuaang Mitr-Sumi, our traditional Asian sushi chef & has been at The Codfather restaurant for 18 years. Allan David Machona is a new age sushi chef who produces very modern, cutting edge sushi dishes.

A true success story, Wiliam Maduma & Charles Ndlovo started at The Codfather restaurant over 20 years ago as waiters & have been managing the restaurant for the last 15 years. Bongani Ngwena a trained sommelier, he can assist you with the perfect wine & food pairing. Rob Berrisfor is a legend in the industry, as our host and fish counter adviser he will always make you feel welcome. Yuen Smitdorf overseas the restaurant as a whole.

The Codfather restaurant boasts a wine cellar for private dining that can seat up to 20 guests. The wine cellar is perfectly suited for corporate clients looking to host board meetings, business lunches and dinners. For smaller, more intimate dining we offer a 10 seater private dining area.
In the main area and on the Sunset Deck we cater for large functions, which can include set menus.
